People Who Don’t Eat Gluten Don’t Even Know What Gluten Is

People are very interested in healthy eating nowadays. It seems like everybody has an opinion on what you should and what you shouldn’t consume in order to stay fit and healthy. Lately, there is an anti – gluten trend spreading with the speed of light, and people are almost religiously avoiding foods packed with gluten.

And it also seems like many of these anti-gluten folks don’t even know (surprise!!!) what gluten is. Now, for some people that are intolerant, gluten can really make things hard, 90% of the people avoid gluten just because they heard somewhere, they shouldn’t consume it.

In this video, Jimmy Kimmel asks random people if they actually know what gluten is.

Some info about gluten :

Gluten (from Latin gluten, “glue”) is a protein combination found in wheat and related grains, including barley and rye. Gluten gives elasticity to dough, helping it rise and keep its shape and often gives the final product a chewy texture.

It is actually a combination of two proteins, gliadin and a glutenin, and is conjoined with starch in the endosperm of various grass-related grains. Worldwide, gluten is a source of protein, both in foods prepared directly from sources containing it, and as an additive to foods otherwise low in protein.

The fruit of most flowering plants have endosperms with stored protein to nourish embryonic plants during germination. True gluten is limited to certain members of the grass family. The stored proteins of maize and rice are sometimes called glutens, but their proteins differ from true gluten.
