The Miracle Mineral – Magnesium

Today, ordinary people’s diets are based around eating large amounts if refined foods and less raw foods like fruits and vegetables. And since fruits and vegetables are the best natural sources of this mineral, this means that the amounts of magnesium that people consume in their diets are constantly decreasing.

Magnesium is a remarkable natural substance that is overlooked by traditional medicine lately.

These are some of the effects of this mineral in our body:

* Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Yes, magnesium has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It works by inhibiting the calcium-induced inflammation pathways of cells. Today we know that inflammation is the main factor in many diseases.

* Low magnesium levels causes inflammatory cytokines (small cell-signaling protein molecules), interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha to elevate in the body. What is specific about each of these molecules is that they are both linked to heart attacks and congestive heart failure. In fact, when interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha are raised, it’s a sign that there is an inflammation in the body. Increased consumption of Magnesium reduces the levels of these two proteins.

* Magnesium is required for energy production, proper growth and maintenance of bones, proper function of nerves and muscles, preventing blood clots. It is also needed for proper immune function. Additionally, studies show that being deficient in magnesium accelerates the aging process.

* Low magnesium levels seem to have an effect on serotonin. It is thought that the shortage of magnesium reduces serotonin levels. A 2008 study showed that magnesium was as effective as antidepressants in treating depression among people with diabetes.

* Some studies suggest that increased magnesium intake can help in lowering high blood pressure and improve insulin sensitivity.

* Studies done by scientists at the University Hospital of Parma, Italy, came to the conclusion that magnesium deficiency in older men lead to lower testosterone and IGF-1 levels in their blood.

Most of the magnesium is located within the cell itself ( around 99 percent ). This is why blood tests are not able to tell you if you have magnesium deficiency. To be certain that you have adequate levels of magnesium it is important to include foods high in magnesium in your diet. Here are some of those foods:

-avocado
-kiwi
-mango
-orange
-grapefruit
– broccoli
-legumes, whole grains
-spinach
-sunflower seeds
-pumpkin seeds
-almonds
-cashews
-Brazil nuts
-tuna
