There has been a lot of talk about the benefits that green tea has to offer. Can it really speed up your metabolism? Can green tea help you loose fat? Is green tea actually good for you?

Green tea has become very popular lately and not just because it can quench the thirst, but because of the number of benefits it has to offer for your health.

As we use oxygen to survive, our bodies create chemicals or by-products known as free radicals. Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an unpaired number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. The danger comes from the damage they can do when reacting with cellular components like our DNA and cell membranes. This can cause cell mutation or even death of the cell.

Green tea contains antioxidant chemicals, more commonly known as catechin polyphenols. These antioxidant chemicals work in our favor by preventing and repairing the damage done by free radicals. One of the main derivatives of green tea is called EGCG (epigallocatehcin-3-gallate). This EGCG has been proven to control and stop cells that are multiplying and out of control (cancers).

EGCG is also known for cartilage protection and reduction of the swelling and pain in your joints. Other ingredients in green tea can help you lower blood pressure, boost your immune system, fight the cause of allergies, defend your body against infections, prevent tooth decay, and even reduce acne.

But maybe the most important characteristic of the green tea for the fitness society is that it can speed up metabolism and help you lose weight and body fat. This can happen trough few different mechanisms. One of them is to control the quantity of carbohydrates that enter the cell, which helps control the blood sugar after a meal, suppresses appetite and reduces fat storage. Some studies suggest that combining caffeine and green tea will further increase the effect of speeding up the metabolism and fat loss.

So don’t hesitate to drink at least a couple of cups of green tea a day, because it really is good for you.
