Let’s face it, as far as our health and fitness is concerned, many of us are probably guilty of not doing all that we can in order to ensure that we’re as fit and as healthy as we can possibly be. Two key factors that play pivotal roles in determining just how healthy we are, are diet and exercise. In order to enjoy optimal levels of health and fitness, we need to ensure that we follow a healthy and balanced diet consisting of fresh, nutrient rich, healthy and balanced foods.
On top of that, we need to ensure that we get enough physical exercise on a regular basis, and that’s where many of us slip up. Exercise is hard, especially if you’re not as fit as you could be, but that is no excuse not to do it. Take cardiovascular exercise for instance.
When people think of cardio, they tend to picture an exercise bike, a cross trainer, or a treadmill in a gym, but in reality cardio can be performed in a number of different ways, in a number of different locations. If you’re finding your cardio tough because it’s boring and not enjoyable, here are a few tips that should be able to help you out.
Listen to your favorite music – It doesn’t matter whether you’re working out in your local gym, or going for a job around the block, the simple fact remains that in order for your exercise to be its most efficient and effective, you need to be enjoying yourself. A great way of ensuring that you enjoy your workouts, and that you stay motivated is by listening to your favorite music. Use an MP3 player, iPod, or any other device for that matter, as long as it allows you to play music. Throw on your favorite songs, and get burning those calories.
Do it with a friend – When training alone, cardio is incredibly boring, there’s no getting around that. A great way of ensuring that your cardio is far less boring and much more enjoyable is by doing it with a friend. Having a friend with you gives you somebody to speak with during your workouts, providing you aren’t working too hard of course. As well as having somebody to speak with, having a friend there also adds a competitive element as you could get a little bit of a friendly rivalry going on. There is also the motivational boost as well, as you can encourage each other and spur each other on.
Do things that you actually enjoy – If you’re looking at getting more cardio in but you absolutely hate using treadmills, or even gyms in general for that matter, then don’t use them! If you’re not enjoying something then what is the point? Find something you do enjoy and stick with that. If you enjoy swimming and you’re a strong swimmer, head down to the nearest pool and do some laps. If you enjoy cycling, do more cycling. Cardio can be performed in a number of different ways, and providing it increases your heart rate and makes you break a sweat then you’ll still be getting the benefits.
