Tim McGraw’s Diet: Follow the ‘1883’ Star’s Regimen

There’s no telling how Tim McGraw manages to squeeze in a rigorous exercise and diet routine between his 1883 appearances, seemingly nonstop tours, and busy family life. Yet, if something is that significant to you, you will make the time for it.

Tim McGraw has had an interest in sports and fitness ever since he was a kid, but it wasn’t until he hit his forties that he made a serious commitment to improving his health via exercise.

There’s no doubt that he’s started eating more salads and cutting back on his late-night beer binges and booze-fueled ramblings. But this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the fitness achievements of the former country star turned 1883 actor.

What Does Tim McGraw Do to Stay Fit over 50?

  • Maintains a consistent exercise routine regardless of location
  • Develops exercises that challenge every muscle in his body
  • Believes that “preparation has to be harder than the game”
  • Sticks to a modified, caveman-like diet

What Fitness Means to Tim McGraw

We all know that incorporating cardio, strength training, and flexibility training into your workout routine not only helps you maintain the condition of your muscles but also improves the rest of your body. Several studies have demonstrated the positive effects of physical fitness on psychological well-being. Because of this, McGraw says he doesn’t “really gets tired of training.”

“There’s such a feeling of accomplishment that comes from the feeling of being my age and still being at the top of my game,” the country icon explains.

The nation took notice of the other elements of his life that he had improved, including his performance while he was on stage. McGraw was aware that he used his “whole body to sing,” including his diaphragm, his derriere, and everything in between.

“That’s the first thing I started doing, and I found that made a big difference for me,” he said. “It just started my day out better. I just realized how much it raised the bar on everything that I did. It raised the bar on my career. It raised the bar on my relationships with my friends.”

McGraw also revealed that he regains some measure of control in his life by adhering to a rigorous exercise and nutrition routine. Even if he is unable to predict which roles he will play or which gigs he will get, he is in complete control of the food that he consumes and the amount of time that he spends working out at the gym.

“Most things in this business are out of your control,” he said. “What the radio is going to play, how many records you’re going to sell. Control the things you can, and maybe that helps.”

He continued, “It just made me feel better, gave me a better mental outlook on everything that I was doing.”

McGraw’s Fitness Regimen

McGraw adapts his workout to the environment he is in and the amount of time he has available to devote to his regimen on a daily basis. While he is at home in between tours, he can choose to do one of his more rigorous exercises, the kind that work every muscle in his body until it seems as if it has been turned into jelly.

But, if he knows he only has a few hours to get ready before going on stage or set, he will likely opt for a more rushed routine.

Here’s a quick workout routine that he shared with Men’s Health

McGraw does three sets of each of the following exercises:

  • 25 hindu pushups (downward dog to cobra yoga positions)
  • 25 hindu squats (deep squat jump)
  • 10-15 sprinter split squat per leg (runner starting position to folded back-leg extend)
  • 25 bicycle crunches

In the meantime, just because he’s touring the country and treating us to spectacular live performances of songs like “I Like It, I Love It” does not mean that he follows the path of least resistance. In point of fact, one could argue that his tour workout is the most difficult of all of them.

Tim McGraw’s workout while he’s on tour

“We start in the morning, and I always start all of my workouts with a 30-minute walk on the treadmill just to get everything loosened up and flowing,” says Tim McGraw. “Then we’ll do some stretching and stuff. Typically in the mornings it’s more of active yoga and body weights. Then we go in and run stairs in the arena.”

And this is by no means the conclusion of the story. The next part of McGraw’s day consists of a “huge CrossFit training session in the afternoon,” which can run anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half, depending on how everyone is feeling physically.

It would appear as though McGraw’s trainer is going above and above for a person who is already in great shape, but McGraw’s trainer has insisted that a challenging workout makes performing live much simpler.

“You know, practice has to be harder than the game,” the country star said. “So, I live by that philosophy when it’s touring. Like you work really hard all day long, and by the time you hit the show, then you’ve got two hours of doing a show, then it’s fun and easy.”

Tim McGraw’s Diet

Doing physical exercise regularly is, without a doubt, simply one part of the puzzle. Tim McGraw also follows a food plan that is just as rigorous, which provides him with the nourishment he needs for his subsequent full-body workout.

According to Pop Workouts, Tim McGraw adheres to the Paleo diet, with the exception of his time spent on the show 1883, during which his character James Dutton enjoyed some biscuits and grits.

The Paleo diet, which is based on the eating patterns of cavemen who lived during the Paleolithic era, prohibits the consumption of any foods that would not have been accessible to them at this time. That rules out grains, processed dairy products, and refined sugars, among other things… You are restricted to eating only meats, vegetables, and fruits for the most part.

Even though McGraw bases the majority of his meals on natural carbohydrates and proteins, he does adapt the paleo diet in order to accommodate the rest of his lifestyle. The actor who appeared in 1883 does, in fact, consume wheat, but he takes care to prepare them with components that are free of gluten.

For instance, he will prepare himself a bowl of organic oatmeal topped with sliced banana, raisins, and maple syrup first thing in the morning.

In addition to that, Tim McGraw follows a diet that is grass-fed. Even if he does continue to consume grain, the animal items that he consumes do not contain gluten. Also, he avoids eating foods that are high in saturated fat. In its place, he’ll use coconut oil, olive oil, and avocados, all of which are much healthier options.

This may indicate that the fit country star doesn’t revel in a burger very often, at least not one that is bun-less, grass-fed, and cooked on an open flame.

But, the energy he experiences on stage and in the studio makes the sacrifice worthwhile for him. That’s great news for us, because it ensures that he’ll continue performing on stage and screen for many years to come.
