People can’t believe they’re over 80: They lift weights, run, train, and look better than most young couples.

Most of us would consider ourselves lucky to live up to 80 years without major health problems, but for one elderly couple from Canada, optimal physical condition in their golden years is an everyday reality.

The grandparents of former Canadian rugby player Phil Mackenzie have become a social media sensation, thanks to their exceptional physical fitness at the ages of 80 and 84, writes the Daily Mail.

Their incredible fitness routines, which Mackenzie regularly shares on Instagram and TikTok, inspire millions of people worldwide. With nearly 500,000 followers on Instagram and over 870,000 on TikTok, Mackenzie impresses his audience with posts showing his grandfather lifting weights and doing 500 push-ups three times a week – a feat many people, even in their 30s, would struggle to achieve.

Alongside his grandfather, Mackenzie’s content often features his grandmother, who regularly walks, takes care of her diet and sleep, and enjoys an active life full of energy and vitality. In one of his videos, Phil highlights how a proper sleep schedule, daily walking, and avoiding processed foods are key factors that enable his grandmother to live “the most fulfilling and capable” life, even in her 80s.

“Her energy and strength are incredible. Jumping up 50 cm stairs in flip-flops at 80 years old is something that inspires everyone who sees her,” Mackenzie adds.

This extraordinary couple proves that old age doesn’t have to be synonymous with weakness or physical incapacity. Phil emphasizes that the secret to his grandparents’ success is consistency:

“My grandfather has always focused on strength training. To this day, he lifts weights and practices calorie restriction.”

According to him, reducing calorie intake and exercising not only contribute to health but can extend life expectancy and improve the quality of life. While calorie restriction may sound controversial, some experts believe that controlling food intake slows biological aging and improves metabolic health.

However, this approach hasn’t been without criticism, as calorie restriction is also associated with potential risks like nutrient deficiency and fatigue. But these grandparents show by example that, with discipline and a balanced approach, exercise and proper nutrition can bring long-term benefits.
