L-Arginine and Vitamin C: Why Combining Them Boosts Nitric Oxide

Nitric oxide supplements have become very popular in the fitness and bodybuilding industry because they demonstrate increases in lean muscle mass and endurance during intense exercise. L-arginine is the primary precursor – a semi-essential amino acid that is directly converted into nitric oxide inside the body.

But here’s what most people taking L-arginine don’t know: combining it with Vitamin C significantly increases the amount of NO produced compared to arginine alone. The reason is not that Vitamin C adds to NO synthesis – it’s that it prevents NO from being destroyed before it can do its job.

Why Vitamin C Amplifies the Effect of L-Arginine

Both groups followed the same weight training program three times per week throughout the 8 weeks. Strength was measured via leg extensions on both the left and right leg.

How to Take L-Arginine and Vitamin C

Dosing: Based on the research, 3–5g of L-arginine combined with 1,000mg of Vitamin C per dose. Larger individuals (over 90kg) should lean toward the 5g end of the arginine range. The Vitamin C dose of 1,000mg is consistent across most studies – higher doses don’t appear to add meaningful benefit for this specific application.

Timing: Take 30–60 minutes before training for maximum pre-workout effect – this gives the arginine time to convert to nitric oxide and the Vitamin C time to establish antioxidant protection before your session begins. On non-training days, take in the morning.

With or without food: L-arginine is better absorbed on an empty stomach – food slows its absorption and can reduce peak plasma levels. If GI discomfort is an issue, a small amount of easily digestible food is acceptable, but avoid large meals.
