Ranieri Lopes Filho, a Brazilian bodybuilder, suffered an excruciating injury while trying to leg press 400 kg, turning a typical workout into a nightmare that would change his life, and it was all caught on video.
As part of his preparations for a bodybuilding competition in May, the 31-year-old, who has been training for around ten years, was recording his workout for social media. Lopes Filho was enduring a strenuous leg workout at a gym in Piaui, northeastern Brazil, when the incident occurred.
With the weight set at 400 kg, he can be seen in the video lowering himself into the leg press machine and trying a second repetition. Things go wrong almost immediately.
His right knee gives way under the strain as he starts the exercise, and the sound of the rupture is audible on the video.
What comes next is quite upsetting. Lopes Filho is seen screaming in distress, holding his knee, and rolling his head back as the agony sets in.
While he is still stuck in the leg press, gym employees and other members rush to his rescue, quickly removing the weights from the ends of the bar and pushing the machine away from his legs.

After promptly contacting emergency services, Lopes Filho was brought to the hospital, where medical professionals determined that he had suffered a rare but dangerous injury: a ruptured quadriceps tendon.
Even tiny tears can be quite painful and make it difficult to move. To restore knee function, surgery is usually necessary, followed by intensive physical therapy.
It might take him several months to be able to walk normally again, according to the doctors. If his recuperation goes smoothly, it is improbable that he will be able to do even light training until the end of the year.
“It was an indescribable pain, but along with it came the frustration of knowing that all the planning to compete in May had gone down the drain,” he added later.
