Just a few days after the fight with Jake Paul, heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was injured, while two team members have died in a vehicle accident in Nigeria.
The 36-year-old heavyweight boxer was engaged in an incident on Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, which is reportedly one of the riskiest roads in the nation.
According to a series of tweets from Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps, the collision included a “stationary, red commercial Sinotruck” and a Lexus Jeep, in which Joshua was a passenger.
“The crash involved five adult males in total,” the Corps reported. “Sadly, two people died, one was injured, and two others managed to escape unharmed. After being saved alive, Anthony Joshua had just minor injuries.
Joshua is “conscious,” according to a statement issued by the Ogun government, and he has spoken with his family. The former world champion would not require emergency medical attention at this time, it was said.
Sadly, two of his team members have lost their lives in the crash !!
“Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road.”
But according to Ogun State Police Commissioner who spoke to ESPN, “AJ’s car had a burst tire, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle to swerve into the stationary truck parked along the road.”
Following the collision, Joshua was seen on video sitting in his car, which looked to have suffered significant damage, looking confused and in agony. Joshua was seen outside the car in further footage, still grimacing.
The Independent was informed by a Joshua spokesman that the former world champion’s UK-based team was investigating the situation. Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, said to the Daily Mail, “I am away on a family holiday and awoke to the news of this incident.”
